I Knew It!

By Mike Michalak Apr 15, 2021 | 6:16 AM

I started my radio career in 1972 and most of it pulling the early shifts. And I discovered this all by myself over the years but it’s good to know someone threw money at a study to verify it. If you’re someone who has a hard time shaking off morning grogginess after you wake up, this new study finds that waking up to a catchy song can help you be more alert. Researchers found that “melodic” tones, regardless of the music’s genre, is more effective at reducing that morning grogginess — called “sleep inertia” — compared to beeping alarms. They defined melodic music as anything that’s easy to sing or hum along to. Researchers believe the reason for this has to do with how sound is processed by the inner ear and brain, with previous studies having found that music activates brain regions that control attention.
