Roundabout Woes…

By Mike Michalak Aug 27, 2021 | 8:04 AM

Okay, here we go.  I haven’t had a good rant in quite a while but yesterday I had one triggered.  And it hit me waiting as about a dozen…a baker’s dozen to be exact…vehicles totally disregarded the yield sign at the roundabout in Rhinelander and cruised into the intersection as I sat there, inching out and finally laying on the horn in disgust.  Got the usual salutes from people, which, much to my chagrin, I returned and finally took advantage of an opening and proceeding on my merry way.
I’ve driven all over this country and through literally hundreds of roundabouts where drivers are actually polite, law abiding citizens and waiting their turns to enter that concrete circle.
There are not only yield signs upon entering, there are flags that are about as useful as a used Kleenex. I can’t approach the city or county because they’re not responsible.  So, I’m tempted to get ahold of the DOT and start a campaign to get flashing amber lights.  And if that doesn’t work, make them red.  I’ve seen traffic backed up all the way to the railroad bridge on 47 waiting for the dopes heading west on 8 to allow someone else on the road.
There should be questions on license exams about how to traverse a roundabout and if you fail, good.  I’ve even had people cut me off by turning right from the straight lane as I’m entering from the turning lane.
I’m fully aware of all the safety reasons that corner of 8 and 47 was changed from signals to a roundabout but the inconsiderate driver level has gone up dramatically.  I’d use different words but this is a family show.
