As I begin to wind down a career that’s spanned 54 years, I’m reminded of the one thing I never really had over that time. An opinion.
I’ve been a firm believer in objectivity in what I’ve done and hopefully instilled that trait in the many “kids” I’ve had the good fortune to hire and mentor.
Objectivity is defined as the quality of being impartial, unbiased, and based on observable facts rather than personal feelings, prejudices, or interpretations. It involves representing truth independent of individual opinion, making it essential in science, journalism, and decision-making.
Now, that begs the question…do I have an opinion? Hell, yeah! On all sorts of things but I keep them to myself professionally. I defy anyone to label me. I sometimes launch little salvos to test the waters with an inquiry that is benign. I love it when people take things completely out of context and paste me for something I never said. That’s why for the most part online comments are now reduced to useless drivel.
Politics? You bet! Local issues? Yup. Sports? Of course. There are a host of things I’d love to wax poetically about, but you won’t see it or hear it. I plan to keep it up as I leave the very public job I’ve had all these years. There will be droplets from time-to-time but that will be the exception more than the rule.
