Here we are: Labor Day weekend is upon us, the “Last Hurrah” of summer, a time to relax and enjoy before school is back in session.  If you are looking for an event outside of the Northwoods, there are a couple of county fairs going on this weekend in Shawano or Portage Counties,  or… there is the Wisconsin State Cow Chip Throw and Festival in Prairie du Sac, south of Baraboo.   This annual event features a variety of activities, like a county fair, with a parade, live music, an arts & crafts fair, a variety of food, along with a 5K and 10K run, and of course, the famous Cow Chip Throwing Contest!   The Rules… Two chips to each contestant; the chip thrown the farthest will be the only one counted.  There are both men’s and women’s divisions, and each “Chip Chuckers” must be at least 16 years of age. Each chip must be at least 6 inches in diameter. If the said piece breaks up after being thrown, the piece going the farthest will be counted.  Chuckers must select their chips from the provided wagon by the official Meadow Muffin Committee. If the chip is altered in any way, this will result in a 25-foot penalty.  The decision of the Chip Judge will be final!   One final thing: gloves will NOT be allowed!   I’ve heard of similar contests and fests like this in the past; I’m perfectly content getting together with family and friends for a friendly bean bag or cornhole toss!     Enjoy your weekend!   – Larry
