WHO and global leaders could have prevented COVID-19 pandemic, new report says
The World Health Organization and global leaders could have done more to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic, a panel of independent experts say in a new report released Wednesday. The panel says countries’ slow response to COVID-19 led to devastating results.

The group also says the WHO’s response was “hindered” due to lack of global leadership and restrictive international health laws. The report suggests giving more power to the WHO to fight pandemics in the future, including being given “guaranteed rights of access” in countries to investigate emerging outbreaks.

COVID-19 cases surging in Asia and the Pacific, Red Cross says
COVID-19 cases are surging in Asia and the Pacific, the International Federation of the Red Cross said Wednesday. In the past two weeks, there have been over 5.9 million new confirmed cases, with the Red Cross warning that hospitals and health systems in these regions are being pushed to the limit.

“COVID-19 is exploding across much of Asia, overwhelming hospitals and healthcare. More people have been diagnosed with the disease in Asia over the past two weeks than in the Americas, Europe, and Africa combined,” Red Cross Asia Pacific director Alexander Matheou says in a statement.

Vaccine campaigns are underway in the region, but the Red Cross says they are being hindered by “shortages, hesitancy and the costly logistics.”
